Increasingly isolated, creators are moving to Russian platform alternatives like VK, Yandex Zen, and RuTube.
In the weeks following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, I spoke to Russian creators and leaders in the domestic creator economy about the mass migration of influencers to domestic platforms, many of which have close state ties. This story presented several unique challenges given widespread self-censorship and state censorship at the time. Threatened with jail time after opposing the war publicly online, several creators I spoke to had chosen to flee the country.
